Tonka was an owner surrender. Her people were moving and picked a location that they could not bring this family member with them.

Far too often people make these heartless choices, and the most innocent are always the ones that pay the price. Tonka did nothing to deserve to lose the only home she had ever known, and had been in since she was a mere 3 months old.

But luck smiled on this sweet girl, and we just happened to have an approved home looking for a girl just like her.

It was the saddest of days when we met this family at the ferry terminal and they handed her over to us and walked away. Poor Tonka was terribly distraught to see her family leaving without her.  But leave they did, without a backward glance.

Into the loving arms of Alice and Doug she went, and after a few nights of missing her previous family, Tonka, now Kellie, has never looked back.

Tonka was adopted August 17th 2005

Update:

We have just returned from the vet visit. Tonka, now Kellie has a clean bill of health except for an ear infection which we now have ointment for, and some fleas (Advantage 100).
As you and we already know, she is overweight at 100 pounds. This will take time ..

Meanwhile, she is doing great. She gets 4 short walks a day (until she is tired) and limited food. She is not that interested in her food, although she is eating. However, she has tried the "begging at the table" routine, which may explain much of her weight. We no not feed dogs from or near the table. She is also showing her playful side and also spends time trying to kill the Kong.

Nights are calm and we are starting to leave her alone for short periods of time (10 minutes) and although she is waiting at the door we left from, she does not seem anxious. It is all good and we are very glad that she is home with us.

Thanks for setting this all up and the best to you

Alice & Doug
