Dexter came into the care of GSRBC on May 5th 2006.

He came from the local pound, where he was so terrified that he would crawl out of his run on his belly, even after a month of being there. Even the worst cases usually come around within a week. Not Dexter, he remained immobilized with fear.

Dexter is not a GSD, he is likely a hound/dobie/healer mix. When we heard that he was going to be put down because they could not find him a home, and he was not coming around, we had to go and get him.

No animal should ever die alone and afraid. One look into Dexter's eyes and we knew we had to do all we could to help him... He is worth the effort.

He was approximately 1 year old and has never known the love of humans. He was mistrusting, but not at all aggressive. He totally broke our hearts!

We worked with Dexter and helped him to build is trust in humans and his confidence level in himself.

He is a wonderful soul and a special spirit who needed a calm home that would keep working and socializing him to the great big world.
We think Dexter has spent his whole life in a back yard or pen where he never got out. Never got to go for a walk, see cars, people or any other normal environments that most of us take for granted.  He never got to see any of the outside world.

We believe that he lived his whole life in a pen, and one day his owners opened the door and chased him off.  No wonder poor Dexter was so afraid!

Dexter is just one of those dogs that stays in your heart forever.  Sometimes they come in so broken, that all you want to do is hold them and cry.

Then, like watching a flower open, they emerge. The light goes on, and they suddenly know they are safe, loved and accepted.

These are the ones that crawl right up into your heart and make everything come into focus again.

We may have helped Dexter, but he gave us so much more than we could of ever given him.

Dexter has the hugest, goofiest heart in all the world, and we just can't forget him!

Dexter was adopted on July 21st 2006. His time with us was special, and we could only let him go to an equally special home.

Eddy and Dexter live together with their Mom & Dad in White Rock. They are regular social butterflies at the local dog park and are very much enjoying their new life!

We'll never forget you Dexter. Thank you for touching our hearts.

January 4th 2007

On New Year's eve, Dexter and Eddy were outside in their yard for their bedtime pee when fireworks started to go off. They panicked and somehow got the latch undone on the gate and bolted out into the night.  His family immediately went out looking, but to no avail. The following morning, Eddy came back... without Dexter.

Eddy already knew what we did not, and a search party ensued, which went on for 4 days. Searching ditches, parks, fields, farms, golf courses, ravines, reserves, barns and everywhere we could think of. When a possible sighting was called in, we all rushed from every direction to come and find him.  We contacted animal communicators, went door to door, put up posters, set up stake outs, and some of us even stayed out over night waiting for him to cross where we thought he was being seen.

Sadly, today, Dexter was found at the side of the road. He was dead, and was likely killed just a few hours after he and Eddy first got out on New Years eve. It was evident that his passing was instant. We can be thankful that he did not suffer. He likely never even saw it coming.

Dexter was a special soul. It's hard to describe just how easily he could crawl up inside your heart and totally take over all your emotions.  He lit up every room, and his goofy, shy ways made you melt into a puddle of butter.

Melissa and Manny are phenomenal, loving people, who saw in Dexter, what we saw in him.  They loved our boy with all their hearts.

We want Melissa and Manny to know how thankful we are that they came along and and brought this special spirit into their home.  Nobody knows what the greater plan is in this life, or why things happen the way they do. It is with respect and love that we say, they gave him happiness, and filled his heart with love. In return, he filled up their hearts and lives.

GSRBC sends our deepest condolences, as we grieve along with this devastated family.  Dexter was a special light in this world, who stole our hearts and we will never be the same again.

Rest well Dexter. We know you found the pot of gold where all the love is stored.

We'll see you in our dreams....
