Macey has still not delivered her pups. She is doing well, her spirits are up and she is eating well.  She had an ultra-sound last night and everything appears to be well. Those pups just aren't ready to make their grand entrance into this world.

PUPPIES!!

Macey-Mae has had her puppies! 8 healthy wiggling bundles of fur! She is an excellent Mom, and despite her young age, she knew exactly what to do without missing a beat. We're so proud of our girl!

There are 4 blonde & 4 black pups. We are happy to report that all are 8 are doing very well!!

Macey is a mere 8 month old black lab, who is very sweet, very friendly and very pregnant!

Macey was brought down to the lower mainland from Bella Bella by another rescue. They were having a hard time finding a spot for this girl to go and we offered to take her into our care.

Macey arrived to GSRBC today (May 29th) and was immediately seen by our vet. X-rays were done, and it appears that this little girl is carrying 8 puppies.

We all expected her to deliver last night and then throughout the day today, but Miss Macey is waiting until all the hoopla around her stops, and she is able to settle.

She is ready to drop now at any moment and we are keeping a close eye on her. Hopefully by morning we will have some news to share!

After being all cleaned up, fed and cleaned again, they are having a much needed nap. Macey has cleaned them stem to stern and when she is done with the last one, she starts all over again on the first!

We will be having a fun fundraiser for Macey and her babies.

"Name the newborn baby Puppies"  - contest coming soon - stay tuned! (See below!)

Macey, only a puppy herself, was deeply loved by one little girl in Bella Bella, and that is all she had in all the world. Tied to a porch for her whole young life, Macey waited every day for her young friend.

She is now in the safe haven of GSRBC; We couldn't turn this sweet mom-to-be away!

GSRBC will be holding a fun, inexpensive fundraiser to "Name the baby Puppies", with 100% proceeds going to vet bills for Macey and her pups - which are already mounting by leaps and bounds. Stay tuned for details to come!

One lucky little puppy already has been given the name of 'Raven', in memory of a remarkable dog, who passed away today at the same moment she was being born.  Raven was a fighter and spent 13 wonderful years being well loved by one of our board members. She was a tribute to the breed, and we are happy to honor this special dog in this special way.

Many people have inquired about adopting Macey. Please understand that while Macey will eventually need a home, she must stay with her litter right now. We will be accepting applications for both Macey and her puppies until August 1st. Once homes are selected, checked, and approved, the new adopters will be able to come out and spend time with their new pup, or with Macey up until August 20th. At that point, everyone will be released to go to their new homes.  If any puppy homes are selected before this date, new adopters can start to come out, meet and spend time with the pups after July 24th.

Macey and all her puppies went to the vet yesterday. The puppies had all their dew claws removed, were weighed, checked over with a fine tooth comb and given a clean bill of health.

Macey had a good check over as well, and continued to be her sweet and friendly self. We are happy to report that everything is going as expected. All the puppies are at a good weight, and Macey herself has put some much needed pounds. She has lost all the dead fur that was hanging on her, and her coat is a beautiful black, all shiny and glossy. Macey's new diet, and motherhood very much agree with her!

For those of you that have a fast internet connection, we've posted one of the many videos we've made of Macey and her puppies. Note: This is a very large file!

June 17th 2007 ~ Day 13

Macey and her puppies are continuing to grow and thrive.

Wow, where did the first week go - it's almost the end of the 2nd week!!!  There were hours spent sitting and watching the puppies nurse and sleep, feeding Macey 4 times a day & weighing the puppies, doing laundry and doing laundry... and doing laundry!

The pigment on their nose, lips and paw pads started darkening at 7 days of age and their weight has increased from 1 pound to almost 3 pounds.  Their eyes and ears have started to open and will continue to do so over the next several days. We've been asked repeatedly what breed they look like. Well, it is still too early to say for sure, but their faces are starting to look more like a Labrador.  The puppies have been crawling all over the whelping box but in the next few days they'll also start to get their legs beneath them and start to take wobbly steps. They've definitely all found their (not so little) voices, and bellow out for mom when they are hungry.

While we wait for the "Name the puppy" contest to run it's we are using the letters we gave them at birth to identify each pup. Here are some individual pictures!

Hey, stop giggling and don't drop that puppy!

That's more like it.

Macey takes short breaks to go outside for a pee or have some down time playing with Loki & Oscar, which she thoroughly enjoys!

It is wonderful to be able to offer Macey some of her puppy hood back. When watching her play, you can't help but realize just how much she is still a puppy herself.  It is amazing how the instincts of a dog take over, far more than most people realize. Macey, a mere babe, can be with her puppies, take excellent care of them, nurse them, bath them, make sure they are all peeing and pooping and getting enough to eat. She turns them right over and makes sure that every one of them are done. She cleans their ears and eyes, making sure that all development is happening as it should, then she asks (ok demands) to be let out, and she power house plays with the "boys", then she comes and demands a bowl of food, and then she is let back in to be with her puppies, and she goes right back to her work as a Mom. Just like she is an old pro. Macey is truly an amazing girl. She is soft hearted, eager to please, and just so, so happy to be well fed and well loved.

Thank you to all who participated in the name the puppies contest!! With your support we raised $310.00!! This will help a great deal with the huge food and vet bills that Macey and her puppies require. Thank you! Names have been drawn, and winners will be contacted to receive their special gifts!

The puppies are now 4 weeks old, and Miss Macey Mae has decided that she would much rather be a puppy herself than a Mom. Now that they have their teeth in, she no longer wants to nurse (and who can blame her?!) and has really limited her time wanting to be with them. She is, however, still very protective of them and will go in from time to time to check on them.

The puppies themselves are doing amazing! They are all at a very good weight. Their eyes are open, ears are open and teeth are in. A few are starting to break out of the whelping box and yesterday (July 1st) they had their first day out in the yard. OH what a great BIG world it is out there!

As they move into the Canine socialization stage, it is hilarious to watch them practice their body postures and face expressions on each other. They are busy testing out those brand new teeth on anything and everything, including our toes!

As the puppies developed more of their own personalities, we will made them each their own web page. Please see our adoption pages for information on each pup.

We do have a few applications on file already, but are still looking for more really great homes for these babies! We will start to visit new potential homes towards the end of the month. Thank you again for all your interest!

August 14th 2007

Miss Macey-Mae had her spay done today and had both of her rear dew claws removed, as they were quite large, dangly and a overall danger. She is having a harder time with recovery, as her young body has already been through so much.  But thankfully, there will be no more babies for this sweet girl. Macey is still very much just a puppy herself, and she has much to learn about this world.

She enjoys playing with the others dog very much, and has been welcoming to new dogs coming into our home.

GSRBC recently had it's annual bbq, and Macey was in her glory with all the people and attention! Well... when she wasn't busy playing, that is.

Macey is done, done, done with puppies. Even her own! She is done with motherhood and would much rather play with the pups than be their protector, nurturer or provider. She is done!

Three of Macey's puppies have gone on to their new homes now, and only 5 remain, along with Macey, who truly would love to have a home of her own, and people of her own.

Her socialization to the big world and new things will need to continue, as Macey isn't always sure how to act in different situations. She can be 'guardy' of her home but she is not aggressive, just puts up a whole big kafuffle when someone is around that doesn't belong there. She certainly lets us know about anything she feels is not right in the world. Including the neighbors out in their own yard.

Macey has a big long houndish drivel, which is supposed to be a bark, but comes out like one big long song. ha ha. She is very happy about that too! Thank you very much. ;)

Macey would do well in a home with another dog, as she really does enjoy their company. She likes to play, and needs a good match as she really can play like a power house with the boys.

Macey continues to be her sweet, unfocused self, who dearly loves people. She has no sense of your space and her space and prefers just to merge the two whenever she possibly can.

She loves to snuggle down on the couch and watch TV, whether you are there watching with her or now. I swear she hangs on every word of Oprah!

Macey's house training is coming along very well, and she has not had an accident in weeks. She has been left alone in the house for a few hours with the other dogs and there has been no damage at all. She is a very good girl, is eager to please, has gotten over ALL of her food issues, and is gaining weight nicely.

Macey brought 8 healthy, well tempered and beautiful puppies into this world. Each of those puppies will fill someone's heart with love, and they will be their cherished companions. This is her legacy. People have come all over for her puppies, without giving her even a glance.

Macey should not be over looked. She is a very special girl. She is ready for her new life.
