Nova loves to wade in the river and play with anything, especially balls! She enjoys going on the children’s wooden climbing frame in the park, particularly the swaying bridge which she wanted to do over and over again!

Nova is house trained and sleeps well thru the night. She is quiet in the house, no barking so far, neither has she chewed anything she shouldn’t have. ;)

She is very responsive to praise and actually smiles when she knows she has done something good.

Nova will require some general obedience training to ensure that she is responsive to all commands. Especially recall!

At the moment she doesn’t enjoy being groomed, but that will hopefully change soon. It appears she is just not used to this kind of handling.  Nova is big girl with a thick coat that will require a bit of maintenance to keep her looking beautiful.

Special thanks to DHS for taking good care of this girl!

We will update her page as we learn more about her.

Nova is a lovely, calm (so far), spayed 2½ year old, white PB German Shepherd. She was apparently surrendered to a shelter because she grew too big! Can you imagine???

She is CKC registered as one of Artica's dogs. The breeder was called, but did not come to claim this sweet girl. So that left Nova with no one except the shelter staff to care for her.

While the shelter staff tried very hard, Nova had never been away from her family, and was finding shelter life too stressful. Like most GSDs, she did not fair very well at all, and once we were made aware of her, we went to get her. She has come complete with her papers & pedigree; This will be given to her new family upon adoption.

Nova has just been with us a few days (June 9th), and so far she has been an absolute pleasure to be around. She is very gentle with cats and puppies and is friendly, but not overpowering, towards small dogs.

Currently she is a little apprehensive of some large dogs but is always willing to say hello. She is calm on a leash under all conditions she has encountered so far – traffic, people, bicycles, skateboarders, small soccer crowds cheering. She seems to be equally at ease with men, women and children.

June 17th ~ Nova's foster writes:

Nova continues to be a delight, a really affectionate calm girl. Loves to play with any toy but ropes and balls are favorite. She has started to respond to overtures for play from my cat but is unsure what to actually do, so she comes and asks, she is so funny.

She now knows "come", "wait" and "this way". She has been getting a lot of exposure to children of all ages playing baseball and soccer and generally screaming around, as well as dogs of all shapes and sizes. She gets excited by soccer balls being kicked about and balls and sticks being> thrown, there is no malice in her though, she is just being a big playful puppy.

Nova is coping astonishingly well with being left while I am at work. I really think that although someone may have been home all the time in her previous life, I think she was left alone a lot of the time, maybe in the laundry or basement. It's just she has absolutely no expectations of attention from me, I usually initiate everything and she looks so grateful! Lately she has started bringing me things to play with of her own accord, so that is nice. She continues to be gentle with the cats and they both really like her.
She is such a really great dog; very willing to do the right thing and a quick learner. She is learning to give the ball up now which is huge for her as she just wants me to tug it all the time. She is learning the trade off - give the ball and it gets thrown, don't give the ball and it is not such fun.
