Jessie is issue free, and while she is a bit confused as to where her family is, with a little time, she will be ready to give that all to someone new.  Jessie has had her heart broke, and we are not willing to risk that again. Her next stop, must be her last, and only the very best will do.

September 6th 2008 ~ Notes from Jessie's previous owner:

Jessie loves to run and play at the park, meaning jumping in and around the equipment. She knows the word “up” followed with you showing her where you want her to go, she will gladly jump up and sit down, waiting for your next direction. She loves car rides and sits or lies down, quite often just falls asleep. She does not chase cars, or stick her head out the window. She is fine with being left in the car, for short periods and you will often find her curled up in the passenger side front seat. She knows to get into the back when you approach the vehicle and to stay in the back while driving. On certain pitches, she will often howl and match the music on the radio!

At the park, she responds well to recall, providing she is not into something smelling really good, then she comes on her time, but, usually when you start walking towards her, or call her and walk away from her, she will come running. She won’t stray for long. She is cautious of other dogs, and will not run up to them and chase. She will run towards them, but, often will stop a fair distance away and wait for them to come to her. If you tell her to wait she will until you are closer, or she responds to leave it, and will walk on, or resume her play. She is good with meeting other dogs on leash, and will often just stay close to you. She is curious of cats,

Medical history:

Swallowed sock – removed

Bit by Malamute – above eye, in eyebrow, 4 stitches.

Swallowed bottle of Tums – Induced vomiting

May 2006 she had surgery on rear left leg. Playing with another dog at early age, shattered cartilage in knee cap, bone shards removed, re-grew bone marrow. Specialist every two wks, lots of checkups for first year. No problems. Now I have noticed that just in extreme temperatures it causes her problems. She will limp and let you rub it, and stretch it out, due to rehabilitation stretches I worked with her, she loves to have it rubbed and work. No fear at vets now. It does not cause her any pain, and I have not experienced any problems with her. If she runs too much you will notice a wobble in her leg. But is fine with a rest, I usually just avoid this kind of play.

Please find her a really great home!

Notes from GSRBC:

As anyone reading Jessie's story can see... She is very well loved.

It is unfortunate that life has turned the way it has for her previous owners. But it really is a testament to how much they care about Jessie that they are willing to do what is right for her and allow her to be free to find another home where she will be cherished just as much as she has always been.

As sad as it is, It is not possible for Jessie to return to her previous home. Jessie is seeking a new family to carry her the rest of the way.  Please open your heart to this very, very deserving girl, who is used to giving as good as she gets.

Jessie is a 3 year old, spayed, German shepherd mix. She was originally in our care with her litter mates in the summer of 2005. And like all the puppies, she was placed into a home that met our requirements for care.

Jessie has lived a good life so far. She has been well socialized, well trained and has enjoyed agility, as well as many loving moments with her family.

Through no fault of her own, Jessie has found herself needing our help once again. Her person is broken hearted to have to return Jessie to us, but due to personal hardships, Jessie's care can no longer be met.

Jessie is one of our own, and like all the others, they are under our wing for life, and we are here to catch them should they fall.

Jessie has maintained her sweetness and love for life. She has never known an unkind hand, and we will be sure she never will.  She is a rock solid girl ,and would be a great dog for a first time GSD owner, and an all round great addition to any family.

even though she has lived with two since birth, minus these past 10 months. If she is on leash she will stop you and want to run towards them, again responds to leave it. Squirrels are another thing, if she could, she would be up the tree... Great for camping though, keeps the pesky things away from your food!! She is good with small dogs, and medium size dogs, she is a little cautious of larger dogs, such as  Alaskan Malamutes, often will not pass them and stop dead in her tracks. . She will go to larger dogs, with its ok girl, or good girl Jess. She relies a lot on human assurance that some dogs are alright, as with children.

She is good at letting you walk out of doors first, and entering first. She is patient, and you can pick up her leash and she will sit and wait till you are ready to go for a walk. She walks well on a leash and knows, “with me” as a command for heel. She has a habit for sniffing LOTS but, she knows leave it and again 'with me', and she walks with you. She often will not go bathroom on a walk, but, rather at home. Also, gravel, she will go to the bathroom on gravel over grass

She is excellent with children, she was raised with my nieces since they were 2, and often on sleepovers she would be in the bed with the twins. She will let them in her kennel, and be on the outside of it, near her food and her while eating and is excellent with them in a vehicle, whether it be playing or driving. She will put up with towels as head dresses and being pulled around the back yard, left, right and center. She takes treats gently and won’t snatch. She does however like to sit and wait for human food, especially with children being perfect height for her, and little waving hands, she will not take the food, but will follow intently. She knows to lie down, while humans eat and has never been fed from the table. She eats twice a day, in the am and pm around 5 pm. She knows the word “dinner” and does not like to miss it!

She is fine during the day, and can last 8 hrs if needed. She is kennel trained. She is also fine with being confined to one small area, which I find is best for her if leaving her for a longer period of time. She does not chew, but, will get into things, you can tell she worries, but in a space she is comfortable. i.e.. Such as my bedroom she is quite happy. You will however find the blankets pulled back and her nest of where she has slept. She would be fine with a bed in a confined area, providing it is not made of fluffy material. She will destroy it, and I mean destroy, she can have a tennis ball defuzzed and in two pieces in less then 20 minuets. She does it quite patiently and organized, quite the event to watch actually. Street hockey balls from Canadian tire are the only balls she will go for. Any thing with a squeaker will be de-squeaked in T minus 1 minuet. She has preserved one squeaky ball in her three years, and loves it to bits. Why this one was a keeper, I am not to sure. There has been many a muted, eye less, stuff less crocodiles in her life time.

She is a jumper, but, will not jump fences to escape. She jumps heights with ease, and will on command, this is from agility. In agility she displays no fear whatsoever on the teeter-totter, A-frame, Dog Walk, or any of the contact equipment.  She loves the tunnel, the weave is her vice. She is very food oriented, and we were working on making her run for toys instead. She can get distracted easily, but, will come back to it with commands. She is always watching you, even when you think she has just buggered off somewhere! She bonds with humans fully and will be aware of everyone in a group and there whereabouts. She wants to be with you all the time, and be included. She does not like to be left alone outside, and will wait till you come back to play.

She is a good listener and knows all commands, such as down, sit, and stay. She knows how to shake a paw, tip and tap, and take a bow. She knows in the truck and back to bed, if you want to sleep in! Upstairs, downstairs, and wait, leave it, and go pee / bathroom Jess. “Cookie” is her favorite word, as with most… but, don’t say the word freely, she will remind you! She is very responsive and listens well. She knows what you want of her, and will do it, sometimes tests you reluctantly, when she doesn’t want to do it, but will. Such as a half attempt at a lie down, but with “all the way, jess” she hits the deck and crosses her front paws, with her chin on top followed by a sigh!

She is stubborn and free willed, loving, gentle and a big suck. She loves you sitting crossed legged, and her being on her back in your lap, having her belly rubbed. She would sit there for days! She loves sleeping on the bed, almost a must actually. And will put herself to bed, if you choose to stay up late! She loves to sit on the couch and watch TV and movies. Sit beside you while on the computer and sun tan while you are outside. She just wants to be with you at all times. She is not a demanding dog, very gentle and calm. She loves the water and running, running, running, so fast sometimes, your legs are her stop! She will swim with you as far as you go, and shake all over your dry towel! She will be your best friend, the biggest goof and sometimes the biggest pain in the butt all at the same time. But, she will make you laugh and with her antics, facial expressions and the love she has to give is immeasurable.

Jessie (aka Miss Milly) as a Puppy. (2005)

October 8th 2008 ~ Update from Jessie's foster:

I have to admit that if I were checking out the GSRBC website for a dog to adopt, I wouldn't give Jessie a second glance.  She just doesn't look special to me.  However, Jessie needed fostering and I had space - and in less than 24 hours I realized she is indeed  a very, very special girl.

Jessie is a happy dog who greets life with enthusiasm and joy.  She loves to play.  She would gleefully shred the stuffed toys, so we put them away and let her have the Kongs and Kong balls instead - much safer.  She gets along well with my dogs and respects that they are older and not really interested in running around the yard with her.  She brings rope toys to us for a good game of tug.  She loves going for walks, but hang on tight if she spots a squirrel!

Jessie loves to chew and makes short work of regular Nylabones.  However, the ones for strong chewers are fine and she enjoys them.  We also hide treats inside Kongs to keep her occupied.  She's a smart girl and we don't want her to get bored.  We are very pleased that she has NEVER even tried to chew something that is not a dog toy!

For now we crate Jessie when we go out.  We're not sure it's necessary, but she doesn't mind the crate at all - especially with Kong full of peanut butter and dog cookies to keep her occupied.  We're going to start leaving her loose for short periods and see how she does.

Jessie barks when she's really happy or excited  - and boy is she loud!  She is learning that barking is okay, but she has to be quiet when told.  Sometimes I think she knows better, but is just so full of love and joy she has to tell the world.  Jessie has a quiet side to her personality, too.  She loves snuggling with you on the couch and in bed.  She's really very good about letting you get comfortable then curling up wherever there is room.  The first night in our home she looked at me, then at the bed, then at me again - wanting to sleep there, but polite enough to wait for an invitation.  Now that she knows it's okay, she will hop up by herself.

Jessie travels nicely in the car and is not at all fearful.  It is obvious that Jessie's previous family loved her dearly and treated her very well.  She knows she deserves nothing less than a wonderful family and we agree.  Give her a chance, and she will steal your heart.

October 21, 2008

Jessie has settled in nicely.  Although she is young, playful and energetic, she shows remarkable patience with my older, slower moving dogs who want to sniff EVERYTHING on walks.  Jessie enjoys the interesting smells too, and she is showing a little more restraint when she spots one of those tantalizing squirrels.  She recently accompanied the kids on a school walk-a-thon.  There were hundreds of people, dozens of dogs and no doubt a few squirrels, but she walked on leash like a perfect lady and got along well with everyone.  The leash was passed from student to student without a problem, proving once again that Jessie is a well socialized and confident girl.  There were quite a few comments about how pretty she is, and it's true - she is much prettier in person than she is in pictures.  We think it's because those soft eyes grab your attention and steal your heart!

Jessie loves snuggling with her people, especially at night.  This is fine with us as she makes a rather compact and very efficient bed warmer!  I went to bed one night much later than usual and discovered that the extra pillows had been removed from the bed and the covers turned down  - and there was Jessie waiting for me with her cute little face peering out over the quilt.  Now if only I could train her to make the bed in the morning....

We nicknamed her "Jessie Janes" because she will take food if it's left near the edge of the kitchen counter or lying around in the living room.  However, as long as the food it put away, she is fine home alone without being crated.  She is really good at knowing what is a dog toy and what isn't.  She loves her toys and plays with enthusiasm, but when you offer a treat she takes it ever so gently.  She is also very patient about being toweled off after a walk in the rain - but that short, sleek coat doesn't need a lot of toweling.  In short, she is a really great dog and we hope she finds a really great home soon.  Until then, we are happy to have her.

October 25th 2008 ~ Update

Miss Jessie has found her match! She is currently spending a few days with her new 'Mom' and we are confident that she will never be leaving!

Jessie can enjoy being the only dog once again, and having her person all to herself. She is currently in bed, under the covers, all snuggled up.

Yay for Jessie! A better match could not be found!
