Adopted!!!

She is in fact a very gentle girl that gets along well with people of all ages including children, but is still very frightened of men. She is coming around quickly though,  and would make an excellent addition to an active family.  She is gentle and affectionate, willing to please and playful.

The most Keira will need is continuation of her socialization to the activity around her. Obedience training will definitely help her, as it will all dogs,  but overall she is a very well behaved dog in the house, is not a barker and is willing to do whatever is asked of her, once she knows what it is that you want.

She is a very good looking girl that is healthy, happy and almost ready for her new family.

Keira came down to us already in heat, so her spay has had to be delayed. Once she is finished, we will let her settle down from that and then book her in to have this done.

Keira would do great in a home with another dog, as she does look to them for guidance and reassurance. She plays well with them and very much enjoys having a canine companion.

She is still a little anxious and trying to figure out what all this commotion and hubbub is all about. Traffic, the TV, the phone ringing, the sirens going by, are all new to Keira. Living in a remote area, in the bush, she has not had any opportunity to learn about these things.

Given all she has been through, and all of the changes she has endured, Keira is doing amazingly well! We are very proud of her and her resilience to overcome the obstacles.

Keira has energy to spare and would be best suited to an active home where at least one person is home during the day.  She is fully house trained, but does not yet understand that when people go out, they are indeed coming back.

She may display some anxiety at being left alone for long hours.

December 3rd 2007
Keira is the sweetest, most affectionate dog imaginable.  She loves to cuddle and is delighted that she is allowed to share her foster mom's bed, and she won't let her fear of men keep her from snuggling up to her foster dad!  She is actually much better with men now, and with strangers in general.   One very sweet, patient and persistent little girl at a soccer game really wanted to pet Keira, and it took a while but she succeeded.  Keira sat quite happily and let herself be stroked.  Since then she has let other girls and women approach and pet her.  It's just a matter of time before she overcomes her fears.
Although she loves to run and play and is delighted to have Tracker visit, she is surprisingly patient on her morning walks with the older dogs.  She waits quietly while they sniff - and they like to sniff everything.  She's smart, too.  She figured out after one walk that if she went around her foster mom one way, the leashes would tangle.  So now she keeps to the tangle-free side.  She does have a strong prey drive and will chase cats, squirrels, skunks and whatever little critter was hiding in the small culvert by the park.
She is very feminine little girl.  She eats daintily and takes treats ever so gently.  And she loves tummy rubs!
Keira gets along very well with other dogs but what she really needs is a special person who will love her and include her in their life.  When she first came, her eyes were full of questions, as though she could hardly believe that all that good food, the nice warm bed, gentle hands and kind words were really meant for her.  Now she knows that she is loved, and she loves us back with all her heart.  If any girl deserves a happy ending, it's Keira.

March 2008 ~ Update:

When rescued, Keira was shy, timid, submissive, frightened, clearly traumatized, and yet a soft and gentle soul.  She had a deeply ingrained distrust of people, but especially men. Her current foster family has been working hard with her and a trainer, for the past 5 months to build trust, and has made a lot of encouraging progress.    She gets along wonderfully with the resident dogs and has even been known to get on with some cats!  Keira needs a home of her own now. She is ready. One with soft gentle people who are willing and committed to spending the time and effort necessary to keep socializing and building trust with  this wonderful girl.  It should be a home with secure fencing, and be typically quiet and but with lots energy (perhaps a running partner?).   If  you are a kind-hearted soul who is looking to help a very special "diamond in the ruff" into a happy life as a companion dog, please contact us at GSDRescue@shaw.ca

Keira came into the care of GSRBC after a land seizure was done up north, and the Sheriff found 45 dogs chained up on the property. After seeking some assistance from the local animal welfare societies, all 45 dogs found themselves at Turtle Gardens.

Two of our volunteers drove up to Burns Lake to assist, and brought back Kiera and Tracker. Both are very friendly and we feel, very adoptable dogs.

Keira has been in her is foster home for a couple of weeks now and is a wonderful dog with much love and pleasure to give.  She is about 18 months - 2 years old, and a highly intelligent girl with a great sense of fun!  She is great with other dogs, but is not good with cats and would be best in a home that is feline free as she will give chase.

Keira's foster writes...

Keira is just fine with me and Kathleen, but afraid of Tim and Thomas (and men in general).  She will let them pet her, but she tries to hide behind me.  She is so sweet and affectionate.  No accidents in the house - she goes outside with the other dogs (except she's on a leash) and does her business.  We do crate her when we're not home.  She goes in willingly and seems to like the crate.  I think she feels safe in there.

She is pretty high energy and will need quite a bit of exercise. She is a bundle of good energy, and loves to run. Luckily, I have two teenagers that will run with her. I think that once she settles into her new home, she would love to do fly ball or something like that.

She is more of a medium size dog, smaller than a shepherd for sure. Maybe some border collie in her? She bonds right away, and follows me everywhere. She is able to settle in the house, and doesn't require constant interaction.

All in all, she is a very good girl, is eager to please, pleasant to be around, and fairly quiet so far.  Will be sure to get more pictures and update you as we get to know her better.

Please consider giving this special girl a special home.

May 6th 2008 ~ Adopted!!

Keira has found herself a wonderful family that is truly a great match! They are as active as this little girl is, and are over the moon to be able to bring her home and into their family!

We're over the moon too, to find such a great match for our special girl. She's come a long way and is finally home where she belongs.

We'd wish you well Keira, but we know you are going to be just fine and this is just the beginning of the most wonderful life for you!

July 2008 ~ Update!!

I just wanted to say thank you for looking after me until I found my forever family.  I can hardly believe it's only been 5 weeks since I came here!  I love my comfy bed and even have my own chair. I'm pulling on the leash lots still but we're all working on that.  I have been getting in better shape running on all the beautiful trails in here in Squamish.  And sometimes I get to go off-leash but that's only because I'm so good and come right back when called.  I thought you'd like to see a couple pictures of us.
Thank you, take care.
Kiera
