Adopted!!!

Eva has taken very good care of May and has been doing her best to socialize her and give her some skills in interacting with other dogs. May came in with a golden retriever and was doing fine, but has since become reactive to other dogs. May appears to be quite young, and we have no doubts she will be a good girl after a few weeks with us.

May suffered from a severe case of Demodex. She was mostly bald and had sores all over her body. She has since been treated for that and her hair is starting to grow back in nicely. She has had a health check and been tested for heart worm, her tests came back clear on both counts. Heart worm was our main worry and we are relieved to know that May is a healthy girl!

On any given day, GSRBC gets many pleas for help. Many come in from all over the world in random emails to a mass amount of rescues. People  who have come across a dog that needs help, have bonded and are reaching out to everyone and anyone, looking for that one glimmer of hope that will help a dog that they have come to care about.

They come from all over; the UK, the states, and all across Canada. Most times, we read them, our hearts break and we sympathize, as there are just too many and not enough help. We say a little prayer that they are able to find assistance, and then we move on, back to business in our own area. Trying to help as many here as we can, and unable to keep up with the vast amount of dogs here that are constantly coming.

In early March, we received a plea that wasn't a mass email. It came just to us. The email explained about a German Shepherd girl in Taiwan, that had been abandoned, she was starved and had no hair and sores all over her body. A kind soul named Eva took this girl to the vet hospital and started to care for her.  Eva started to seek out help for this girl, wanting to save her from the factory and came across Vickie's great big heart. Vickie emailed us, pleading for help for this dog.

As we scrolled down and looked at the pictures (see left) of this sickly, bald and depressed girl... we groaned, of course we could not turn away. So with tongue in cheek we said, "If you can get her to us, we'll take her.."

Seriously...... who would send a dog all the way from Taiwan to Vancouver?? Certainly, it would not be possible!

Ah, but never under estimate the heart of a true animal lover, let alone a whole group of them!

GSRBC welcomes May, who arrives the evening of April 23rd :)

May has a whole group of people in Taiwan that are pulling for her. They have been working hard for the last month and have raised the funds for her care at the vet and her airfare to get her here to Vancouver. They want her to have a better life and find that special family where she will always be well loved and valued.

GSRBC will do our best to carry on the same commitment and will that May's group of people have given her so far. We will pick her up from the airport and take her the rest of the way in her life.

Communication about May has been quite comical, as there is obviously a language barrier.

We would read their message board using a site translator, and see they were talking about 'the little sister to the wolf dog'. On and on it went about the wolf dog, and the great need this dog was in...  Well! We thought, the wolf dog must be the German Shepherd and May is his little sister....... so what happened to the wolf dog??? We grew quite concerned and feared for the safety of the wolf dog. Finally, we asked, "where is the wolf dog???", and Vickie laughed... Little sister to the wolf dog means German Shepherd in Chinese. In this case, a female, is little sister.

In late May or early June, her friend Anya, will join us as well! We are glad that we are able to help these two beautiful girls into a better future. For anyone that may wonder why we gave our spaces to two dogs not in our area, go to google and type in three words: Dog factory china - word to the wise... not for the weak of heart....

May will board her flight on Wednesday morning, and after a long 12 hour flight, her feet will touch Canadian ground that same evening.  Please check back to see how this little girl is coming along. May is going on quite the adventure!!

Thank you to Eva and Vickie and all of the people that have come together to help this one girl. She is just one dog in a sea of many. But she is special.

You know, the animals really are the angels among us. They teach us every day. They hold no grudges, and give us the gifts of friendships when we come together to help them.

May is a very lucky girl!

April 23rd ~

This morning May departed Taipei and started her long 13 hour flight to Vancouver. She arrived into Canada this evening, where we met up with her flight to collect her and bring her into our care.

May in Taiwan ~ Getting ready and saying good-bye to her friend and caregiver, Eva

After a very long journey, May arrives!  Thank you to Jane for escorting May! The group in Taiwan that has worked so hard for May, has a representative there to meet us at the airport and to help us collect May. Joanna and makes sure everything goes smoothly. This was very much appreciated! A big thank you to Joanna's boyfriend who willingly cleaned the big mess in the crate that May brought with her as a coming home gift!

Joanna has a sign all made up for us to be able to find her.

May arrives! Notice the way this man is holding face. We do not yet realize the smell radiating from this stinky little monkey!

Welcome to Canada May!

Thank you to Jane for being held up for hours in customs with May

Wheeeeeeeeeew! There are no words to describe the pure gratitude given to this man. There is feces, and then there is this. Now this is a brave soul! Thank you so much!

Leash in hand, May officially becomes a GSRBC girl. At least our coats match!

Kisses already? Yes, I love you too.

All cleaned up and we are on our way

We're all loaded up and ready to go! One last good-bye and we are on our way...

We're home, we're getting settled... It's now midnight and time for all to have a good nights sleep. Rest well little one, you have a big day tomorrow!

April 24th ~

Out for a morning pee and some play time! Weee!

May meets the golden boy

May has a new friend! But what the heck is going on with those ears??

May meets handsome Shaq...

Let the fun begin!

And seals the deal with meeting DeJay. That's all the boys!

Lunch and nap time before we meet Chaos. Everyone will need to be well rested for that one! Chaos (like most females) may not take too kindly to having an intact female in her haven.  Especially one with an attitude bigger than hers!

With the peanut gallery holding their breath....

After a little bit of posturing and conversation, all is well and May is accepted into the pack.

And it's play time!

We were originally told that May was around 2 - 3 years old. May is actually much younger than that. We would not put this girl at more than a year old... if that.  We'll find out for sure once she sees the vet and is spayed, but we're guessing she is more likely about 10 months old.

It's the end of our first day, and May had a great day making new friends and getting lots of exercise. She LOVES her new diet, and is eating well. Of course she should, this girl is as scrawny as they come! May needs to put on at least 10 - 15lbs.

May will be spayed as soon as we are able to get some weight on her and it is safe to do so.  She will see the vet tomorrow.

Thanks again to everyone who played a part in helping May to be safe and have a wonderful future! May thanks you, and we thank you!

She is going to do just fine.

April 25th ~

May saw the vet today, and he put her age at probably just over a year. So we are going with 18 months old.

May did well at the vet and gave everyone kisses. She met a strange dog and did very well, but once back in the vehicle (safely protected) the same dog walked by and May had a fit! haha. We took her out and reintroduced her to the same dog and all was well. What a lot of bravado this girl has got!

May's skin scraping came back negative for mites, which is good news. Her demodex is cleared up. But many parts of her skin are still irritated and inflamed, so we'll do a month of antibiotics to clear that up. That will give us time to get May's weight up. She shocked us all at weighing in at 50lbs! She is a bone rack! Guess she must have some heavy bones!

May is not ready for adoption yet, however, we are accepting applications. Once she is spayed, she will be able to go to a new home.  We'd love to see May have another dog in her new home, as she does love to play with them. But with all her bravado, we would prefer that she not go to a first time dog owner.  She has been introduced to children and has no problems interacting with them. She is fairly gentle, but does get excited at times and jumps up. We will start May in her obedience training early next week. If a home for May should be selected before she is ready for adoption, we encourage her new family to come and be a part of that process.

May 1st ~

May has been spayed today and is recovering nicely tonight. She has put on a few pounds, but still has a ways to go before she is at her ideal weight. She is eating well and has good energy. Overall we are very pleased with May's progress and transition into family life. She is house trained and does not chew anything except her own toys. She is able to be free at night and usually picks a bed in the warmest part of the house as she still is missing a lot of her coat.

May gets along well with everyone, large and small and is a joy to be around. She is a small girl and will not get much bigger than she is now.

Adopted!!

Lucky, lucky May has gone home with Rookie!!! His family was over the moon for May and came and scooped her up and took her home with them!

Little May, who was once a stray wandering the streets of Taiwan,  came half way across the world to find her one true place in this world. One little girl, who had so many people trying so hard for her. It paid off! May hit the jackpot and got the very best home ever!

Special thank you to May's sponsors:

( and to everyone in Taiwan for helping us to help May)

July 2008 Update!

May is such a sweetheart, thank you again so very much. It's funny how things work out. When she first arrived I fell in love with her but wasn't sure the time was right to add another dog. Now I can't imagine it any different, she's such a good match for my whole family.....and she's bringing out a great sense of humor in Rookie...he's such a tease with her.
Thank you again.

Linda
