Adoption Pending!

Dylan was brought into our care July 5th 2008. He is beside himself with worry right now, and scared out of his mind.

But already in one day, we can see a difference, and within 24 hours, we are able to pet him and he is on the brink of wanting to interact and play with us!

The way to Dylan's heart, is through other dogs. He is very well socialized with other dogs as this is likely all he had when he was growing up.

Through them, he is able to see the love, the trust, the playfulness and the carefree attitude they have. He is following their lead already, and while it will take a while, Dylan has a strong temperament and he will over come this.

Thanks again to everyone at Chilliwack Animal Control. Especially Joanne, who took this boy under her wing and spent a lot of time with him. You did a great job!

Stay tuned for more updates on Dylan!

June 18, 2008

Dylan is coming along remarkably well. He will come and initiate play as long as you are down on his level. When we stand up, he is gone like a shot.!

Dylan is right on the brink of wanting to interact, and he is slowly learning to trust us, though he is still not a big lover of being touched and petted. So at least 2 - 3 times a day we spend some time getting him used to being handled. He will put up with it now, which is progress. :)

We're sure that with a little more time, this boy will come to love being scratched behind the ears and having his tummy rubbed. He already relaxes completely when he gets an ear rub. But as soon as we're done, he leaves... though not as quickly anymore.

Dylan continues to be submissive to and eager to please the other dogs. He plays well with dogs of every size. They are definitely his comfort zone, even when they tell him off!

Dylan will need a lot of confidence building and gentle leadership in his new home. He will need a quiet, patient home that can see what a loving boy is beneath all that fear.

August 9th 2008 ~ Update

Dylan continues to impress us with how quickly is he coming around. Already he trusts his caregivers and looks to them for guidance and assurance in stressful situations.

In crowds of people, Dylan will sniff some and ignore others. Some he will even let pet him now. Slow and easy and Dylan does the same.

We feel that Dylan could go to a new home now with very patient and savvy people. He is not ready for a loud and boisterous household, and would still prefer to have a easy and less stressful environment.

Dylan would love to have another playful dog in his new home, and people that will continue to cherish him, but at the same time give him direction and show him the world is an ok place to be in.

October 23rd 2008 ~ Update

Dylan is a happy-go-lucky pup of  9 months.  He would play all day with the other dogs in the house if he could!  Dylan is a higher energy boy and is keen to learn.  He has bonded to his "foster mom" very deeply and often seeks her attention for cuddles and play time. This is HUGE for Dylan! He has come a long way!

He loves all dogs.  Although he is slowly overcoming his general fear of people he still approaches others very cautiously.

Dylan is house trained and kennel trained.  He enjoys his walks and rides well in the car, and like all puppies, he loves chewing and wants what he wants, when he wants it ..... and isn't afraid to tell you!!

Dylan will need a home where positive reinforcement and constant encouragement are the norms.  His past mistreatment has resulted in an intolerance for physical manipulation.  He needs to learn to trust humans and this will come with a true leader, that is calm, assertive in a gentle way, and through this, Dylan will feel much safer much quicker.

Dylan is quick and agile! After some bonding time with a new family, he would probably be a good candidate for "dog sports" as these would also help him build his confidence.

Dylan is waiting for his special people :)

December 30th ~ Update

Dylan is totally house trained and responds to that command whenever taken outside.  That is very handy when you are traveling as he is used to taking advantage of any stops during "road trips".  Dylan is good in the car and will settle quickly to sleep on the long ferry trips.

He walks well on the leash and enjoys these outings.  Dylan is good with recall (on a long line) and is practicing the "finish".  He is getting used to sitting when we stop walking at all intersections.  Other basic commands are really coming along well, too.  Sit is consistent and down 99% ... for a treat.  We continue to work on stay but for a such an inquisitive puppy ... it is torture!!  He focuses very well when asked.

Dylan is trusting more and more people in his world.  Although he barks when someone new comes into the house, once asked to sit, he warms up quickly to them and seeks them out.

His favorite activity though is still playing with his housemates.  During the Christmas holidays he had lots of choices ... both large and small. :)   In a new situation, when he is introduced properly he gets along with most dogs.

Dylan has a mischievous side and loves to tease both the other dogs and his people!   But looking into that adorable face it is hard to stay mad at him!   Dylan would be a terrific addition to a calm and patient home with another dog to help him learn the ropes and feel safe!

Dylan is just a young boy at 5 months old. Unfortunately, his experiences with people have not been positive and he now regards them as something to be feared.

Picked up as a stray in the Chilliwack area, he is thought to be off one of the nearby reserves, where dogs and their puppies are roaming (and breeding) freely. Often, they get no socialization at all to people, other than to be chased out of garbage when they go looking for food, or tormented by the local children.

Animal control has picked up many puppies that have been thrown in the garbage bin or let go at the dump. Dylan is one of the very lucky ones, though he does not necessarily agree with us yet.

Dylan has been at the pound for almost a month while he waited for a spot to open up in rescue. He was highly unadoptable, and huge kudos to the staff at Chilliwack Animal Control for going that extra mile and making an effort for this one pup, when the shelter is always full and space is so limited. You guys rock!

Right now, Dylan will still nip in fear if he feels that he is cornered, has not options, and has to protect himself. Just ask the vet, he took out two staff members on neuter day, and got a free ticket back out of there. So, his neuter is still to be done, and we'll give him more time to bond before we try again. ;)

Dylan is absolutely not available to a home with young children. While he is not aggressive at all, he will need the stability of adults only for a while as he continues to learn what is expected of him at the same time as learning that not all hands will hurt.

He's a heart breaker for sure. Only 5 months on this earth, and this is what the world has taught him about people...  It's just not fair.

We have every confidence that Dylan will overcome these issues, just as his predecessor Flora he is likely from the same family, as he is almost exact in looks and issues!

Flora got a great home, and is doing so well. Dylan will too. We will make sure of it.

July 19th 2008 ~ Update

Dylan is quite a scamp!  He's a puppy and a bit of chewer so I bought him some chew type things to gnaw on so I could get a bit of work done and Zeeva could
have a bit of peace!

He did really well at a friends house and enjoyed playing with everyone.  He was
very cuddly in my truck during the ferry ride and was easy to cuddle.  He is coming over often and letting me touch him.

This morning Dylan was keen to play.  He does have some herding tendencies
"bites" the back of my legs or grabs my pant leg!  He is getting the big "no" for that but often dashes away in play ... He gives up after a couple of tries and usually
gets sidetracked and/or Zeeva steps in too.  He is now letting me give him some tummy rubs ... a bit stiff but ok! However, once we are up and about he still sometimes rushes away ...

All in all ... I think he is really coming around quickly! Much quicker than was expected, that's for sure. This afternoon I think we will start puppy lessons.  He is responding to his name but that is about all ... still follows dogs only ... but does come for treats. ;)

September 23rd 2008 ~ Update

Dylan has come a long, long way, and is now ready for adoption.

Dylan came to us terrified of all people, not wanting to be touched or handled in any way. He has turned into a loving and playful boy, that will always have some level of fear issues, but is 100% better than he once was.

Dylan would do best in a home that has another dog, is home a lot of the time, and is interested in continuing on in his socialization. We feel another dog in the home will help Dylan transition better and relate to the world around him.

What a loving boy he has become!

Reuben and Dylan... enjoying a snuggle.

November 30th ~ Update

Dylan is doing very well.  He is playful and very responsive to his foster mom.  He often climbs up on the couch to snuggle beside her.  He is not keen about other people touching him but continues to gain the confidence to approach them on his own.  He is allowing people that come into the house to pet him briefly as they often bring treats!  He is definitely widening his "circle of friends".

We have been working on leash skills and he is very good.  "Stay" is a challenge but he eagerly focuses and listens carefully to obedience commands.  Dylan enjoys meeting with other dogs but prefers to get to know them first before jumping into full play mode. He definitely likes the security of "his pals" when entering a new situation.

We recently had Dylan out at the Christmas Pet fair and were amazed as how well he did! There was a lot going on, and Dylan handled it all very well and even made a few human friends and got his picture taken with Santa! We were very proud of him. He's come a long way :)

Dylan is still so much a puppy who loves to chew, bark, play, prance and chew some more.  He enjoys his toys and loves stuffies that squeak.  However, those stuffies don't last long.

January 30th ~ Update

Dylan has had a very busy January.  With the New Year came lots of visitors both canine and human.  He enjoyed the dog guests and welcomed new playmates.  But most gratifying is the way he approached the humans that visited. :)

Another first for Dylan was a road trip to Parksville and the beach!  He was such a good guest at the resort and everyone he met loved him.  The endless sand (and seaweed) provided lots of fun.  What a terrific traveler he is!!

Dylan is the easiest dog to walk.  He trots along happily on leash where ever we go and is easily refocused when necessary.  We have been doing  a lot of off-leash practice as well in a controlled environment.  Dylan loves to explore ... but not more than 10 yards away.  He always  checks back with his people and is easily recalled.  Dylan comes running for his yummy treat.

Dylan is more than ready for his forever home.  He enjoys the company of both dogs and his people.  He assumes that everyone that comes to the door is here to play with him and he wiggles and barks with excitement.  He has a lot of love to give and very willing to receive it!

February 27th ~ Update

Dylan has had a lot of changes in the last few weeks. Tanner and Dylan have switched spots, and Dylan is now in our main foster home in the Fraser Valley, and is adjusting to living with 4 other dogs.

He is doing extremely well, and is no where near the shy shell of a dog that he was when he first came into our care. He still does have some fearful 'keep away' behaviors, but once he learns that person is safe, he comes around easily to say hello.

He is much more comfortably if the person is sitting or laying down than he is if you are standing and walking around him. He will constantly walk out of your way... except at meal times! Then he is always under foot!

For a dog that never had human contact, Dylan is doing very well. He gets along with all dogs he meets, and submits right away.  He has tried a couple of times to be a tough guy and push his way through with meaning, but that doesn't work much with my crowd. They are well seasoned to the fosters coming through and are a big help in showing them what is acceptable and what is not.

I still would not leave Dylan loose in the house on his own. However, he no longer needs to be crated when alone. He gets blocked off in the entry way or sunroom. There is no destruction or messes when I return.

Dylan is a really great dog, and he would do well in a home with another dog, or on his own. He can certainly use the one on one attention in order to bond to the people and not just the other dog in the home.  I think he would come around much faster if he were the only dog.

Dylan ~ Settling in on his first day... and yes, I DO make my bed, it just never stays that way!

March 11th ~ Update

We are so happy to update that Dylan has gone off on a trial adoption!

Dylan's potential new family is over the moon for Dylan, and we are all very hopeful that this will be his very last stop! Our little guy is sure missed, but we are so happy for him to have found his special place in this world!

**We feed a raw diet to our rescues. This cuts down on the amount of medical attention they need, as well as makes them all around healthier. The  cost to feed Dylan for one month is roughly 102.08

**If you are able to buy one months worth for one dog, it would greatly lessen the load. Please specify which dog it is that you would like to feed, and we will show your pledge on each dog's page. This special sponsorship is called "Foster Partner in Care" and simply means that you are part of the foster program for the dog of your choice. One home supplies the shelter, and the other supplies the food. Many people want to help, but have no room in their homes to do so. This is the perfect way to be involved with the animal of your choice and be updated regularly on their care and well being. It's a win-win for everyone, especially the dogs! For more information, please see our Sponsor program

For further information on any of our rescue dogs please email us
