One of our members has been in to meet Ginger, and her assessment of this sweet loving girl is as follows:

I had the pleasure of meeting Ginger and I must say she is an absolute sweetheart!

She is a slim girl....underweight but I don't think a lot.  She is bit wobbly in her back end but she can certainly stand up, walk around, and do her business.

She is extremely friendly and loves people.  I took her outside where there was a cat and she paid no attention at all to the cat...she was more interested in the people.  I walked her through the kennel area where there was other dogs and she paid no mind.  She was more interested in getting out of that area....no reaction to barking dogs and if anything she might be more on the meeker side when it comes to dogs.

I was able to touch her all over without her being too concerned....She might be a bit hand shy but she did not react....more checking that I wasn't going to do something.  She let me touch her back end...just watched me doing it.

Here teeth are horrid and the smell from her mouth is overpowering.  I found no lumps or bumps.  Her nails need cutting and her ears looked pretty good.  I didn't stick my nose all the way in but I got as close as I could without making too much of a big deal and there was no odor.

Her eyes are a bit cloudy and her hearing at times seemed to be not so good.  Not sure if it was stress and not paying attention but at other times when she was more focused on me she seemed to respond fine.

Special thanks to the staff at this shelter, who called us to help this poor old girl.

Please help us to help Ginger! We think she is worth it, and hope you will too!

November 13th 2008 ~ Update!

We are so happy to report that Ginger has a foster home open and waiting for her! Thank you to Angel and family for opening your heart and home once again!

Now our biggest hurdle is finding transport for Ginger to be able to make her way from Naniamo to the mainland. If you are coming over and have an extra seat, please get in touch with us right away!

November 19th 2008 ~ Update

Ginger has arrived into our care and is safe and sound in one of our long term foster homes.

Once she was with us, we couldn't help but notice the stench that was coming from this poor old girl's mouth! It took over the whole room!

We made an appt. for Ginger at our main vet right away, and the results were horrifying.

Ginger came in with a mouth full of rotten teeth. So bad in fact, that all her top molars had to be removed and her jaw bone had disintegrated from the infection.
Her sinuses were impacted with infection as well and our vet had to do a lot of reconstructive work to repair bone, and have something to even be able to close her gums with.

Ginger's head was on fire from pain, and sadly, she has been this way for many years.

Her dental surgery was to the tune of 2400.00 and she is now recovering well, and wanting to play with the other dogs in her foster home.
Her spirits are up, she is eating well, and hopefully we'll see some weight gain. She is skin and bones!!

Ginger is otherwise happy and animated and is a loving and gentle girl, with a touch of attitude to keep it interesting. ;)

February 27th 2009 ~ Update

Ginger is doing great! She has integrated herself fully into her foster home and is enjoying being an inside dog with a lot of interaction around her.

Since Ginger's stroke last month, she has been recovering slowly. She seems to have her balance again and has been gaining the much needed weight on her old bones. Slowly is the key.

Due to Ginger's ailing health, condition and age, we have to decided to enter her in as palliative care. Ginger is no longer up for adoption. She will remain in her foster home for the time that she has left, and GSRBC will see her through for all she needs. We feel that in her case, it really isn't fair to have her start again in a new home. Her foster is happy to have her stay for as long as she needs them.

Big thanks to Angel and family for taking this old girl in and sticking by her. For giving her the place to belong and the home life she never knew was possible. She is well loved, and that is a great trade off for us!

July 28th  2009 ~ Update

Ginger has some bladder control issues now. Her hearing is dimmer and her back end is getting stiffer as she gets up. But she gets around just fine, loves her snuggles and rolling in the grass in the park and enjoys all the people fussing over her!

She sure knows her dinner time!!! Always letting us know if we are even a few minutes too late!

She keeps a close eye on those cats and recently decided to get a scratched nose by the newest member of our cat family.  She can go from Lady Ginger Rogers to Ginger Snap in a few quick seconds!

Ginger has a huge presence in our home and hearts and we are very much enjoying the time we have with her.

However, Ginger's medical care does not come for free, and while GSRBC is more than happy to help this old girl out and give her a safe place to be for here remaining time, we need your help to help her. Please consider sponsoring this special girl...

October 2009 ~ Update

Ginger has had a great summer. She has been busy and happy doing it all. Although she is getting a little slow and the heat of the summer was a bit much for her, she sailed threw with no severe health issues. Lately, though Ginger has had some stinky breath and became creative and have found some bones that we spray with beef flavor! Ginger seems to really like those and is chewing away happily, and we are very smitten with her new fresh breath. haha!
Ginger has been a big hit at our Adoption Days and loves to meet and greet the people that have so kindly come out to meet her. Not only has Ginger become the queen of her home she is the boss of everyone and everything, thank you very much! We bought her a crown and she wears it on her collar proudly of course.
What a graceful old gal she is and so animated at times she keeps us smiling. Ginger has come such a long way and we never really thought she would be still hanging around here but she is and we are still amazed at her. I think she is even getting younger. The younger dogs keep their distance in a respectful way and she could not be happier to be respected! I think this is her big thing lately, keeps her young.

Ginger is living a full life and enjoying it it seems. She also has many names now from Ginger Rogers, to Ginger snap, and now Ginger Ale. Ginger loves her massages and getting fussed

Ginger is 12 years old, her owner is known, but he does not want to claim her anymore.
She is currently at one of the pounds on Vancouver island, and they have contacted us for help. They are not prepared to hold her for long though, and we urgently need a place for this old girl to go

Please pass Ginger's information and bio out to anyone you know that might be a great foster or is looking to give a senior their final retirement home.

As always, GSRBC will cover all medical expenses for any of our foster dogs.

She isn't eating a lot in her kennel, but likes to dump her water dish.  I brought soft treats and she loved lose and so I gave her all I had.  She likely has trouble with hard kibble.  She drank water fine.

No interest in toys.  She wines.  She wants to be touched and be with anyone who will give her attention.  I didn't see a mean bone in her body...she's just an absolute love.

She sits very well, walked nicely on the lead with me...although we were in a small fenced in area...she pulled just a bit but pretty much walked beside me as I kept a shorter leash on her.  She sort of knew down but that's about it.  Every time she knew a treat was coming she sat down. She is very easy to handle.  She finally laid down on my feet. She wants to be that close. She is curious and alert.

This is the second time she has been brought in and this time the guy said she was just too much trouble.

She has the softest, kindest eyes...

Ginger is a laid back girl who really didn't appear to me to have any issues and depending on her health would likely do fine in a home with other dogs and cats.  If she's hurting and they want to play she may react as she does appear to be a senior

I don't think the cement floor is doing her any favors.

She is extremely easy to fall in love with!

November 14th 2008 ~ Update!

Ginger has transport and will arrive into our care over the weekend! Special thanks to Bob North for offering to go and get her for us, and to David Dennis for being available and already making the trip. It is SO great to see so many people caring about one special and lost soul.

Rest assured that Ginger is going into a very good foster home, and will be well taken care of until her forever home is found.

We are so grateful for your support!

Please check back for updates and pictures of this very deserving girl!

January 30th 2009 ~ Update

Ginger is finally putting on some weight and has settled in. She has unfortunately, suffered a stroke early this month and it affected her balance in a big way. It was very sad to see her the first few days. She needed our full support with a sling to help her get outside and back in.

We're happy to report that  Ginger is almost 100% recovered but her balance is still an issue. She is weak in the back end and tries to hard to get from point A to B. I think she has adjusted herself now and I have noticed she doesn't really want our help with this.

Besides that, she eats well, drinks, loves her car rides and still jumps into the back of the van with just a little careful support. Ginger is very trusting of us now and since her stroke has really begun to seek out attention and she lets us know when she thinks we are ignoring her!

Ginger loves our youngest GSD who is bigger than her but she is bonded with her and they enjoy kisses. Ginger has taken to cleaning her up and making sure she behaves and knows the house rules. Ginger's number one rule of the house is DO NOT PUT YOUR NOSE ON THE COUNTER in my kitchen thank you! She would of been a great den mother. She is gentle yet firm and the young ones give her the respect she deserves. I think she feels good about having a job.

They say you cannot teach an old dog new tricks? Well Ginger is living proof that you can! She has learned to not tap the window but bark to come inside when she has done her mess, she has learned to pee and run back in the house. Gingers knows the words kitty and be nice! haha..  One of the cats and her play chase and when they stop she stands and looks at them and then wanders off. She is not cat aggressive but needs to have some gentle reminding that cats are not toys.

Ginger is an excellent guard dog and takes her jobs very seriously! Her hearing is dimmer now in her golden years, so she takes her cues from the others and then she decides where there is a breach in security.

Ginger loves people outside the house, but is true to her breed and is cautious of strangers coming into the house. She is bold and brave and will back up her words. Loyal and beautiful, Ginger is one of those dogs you love to have around and enjoy her company. She is still full of so much life and let's us know it everyday!

May 31st  2009 ~ Update

Ginger is so fine right now it is so hard to believe she is the same dog!

Finally the sun is out and so is Ginger! She is totally her own gal and we think she loves it here with us and our busy house. Never a dull moment for Ginger to keep her on her toes.

Ginger is an amazing dog she must of been a stunner as a young Lady, now all cleaned up and healthy looking she stops people and they have to touch her. She loves to get that attention, once she warms up to you of course! Ginger loves to play with the other dogs, and tries to keep everyone in their place. I have never seen a dog hold another dog in play with two front paws wrapped around her victim and she puts her head on their neck and then hangs on... It is the funniest thing I have ever seen.   Too my surprise I saw our Spirit (youngest one) doing this new death grip on another dog today! I thought it was pretty funny, but the other dog did not... Lets hope Ginger has no more sweet things to pass on!

Although Ginger has been getting stiffer a bit more these days and slower to get up, once she is up she's ready to go and still gets her fun time in too. Ginger still delights in car rides and goes everywhere with us when it is not too far or hot out. With the warmer months ahead we have started showing her the pool and hope she likes lying in those instead of the MUD puddles in the park!! Fingers crossed.

We hope Ginger has the best summer of her life and we sure are going to enjoy her as much as we can. She gives the best snuggles.. Thanks again to all her sponsors who continue to give the financial support! This has made Ginger's life so much more easier to bear in her golden years, we thank you and she does too..

over, but she still is a bit funny about her mouth being looked at and who can blame her after all that mouth has been through. Ginger has healed up nice and looks great! Ginger's winter coat is coming in and it is thick! So what a good sign for her, a healthy coat and almost a year later she is a new dog. A little more gray and her hearing is going, but she has learned how to get around by keeping a close eye on her world. She knows from the younger ones who's coming and going and what better way to stay in the loop with a little help from her friends. So thanks to everyone who has helped her once again! Ginger would not be here if we didn't get the support we need to keep her healthy and happy. We look forward to keeping her around a lot longer!

Ginger attended our adoption day on November 21st.

Check it out: (special thanks to Patricia & Mark)

November 2009 ~ Update

Ginger joined us recently for our latest adoption day at Tisol Pet food in Langley.  She seemed to have a great time, and enjoyed everyone oohing and awing over her.

She is continuing to enjoy life in her foster home! We'd like to thank everyone who has sponsored Ginger and enabled us to put her into palliative care so that she does not have to move again and can live out her final time, in a place that she is truly happy. It is the one place that has shown her unconditional love, kept her safe and attended to all her needs. For Ginger, this is her family, and we're so thankful she is able to stay where she is..

**We feed a raw diet to our rescues. This cuts down on the amount of medical attention they need, as well as makes them all around healthier. The  cost to feed Ginger for one month is roughly 105.00

**If you are able to buy one months worth for one dog, it would greatly lessen the load. Please specify which dog it is that you would like to feed, and we will show your pledge on each dog's page. This special sponsorship is called "Foster Partner in Care" and simply means that you are part of the foster program for the dog of your choice. One home supplies the shelter, and the other supplies the food. Many people want to help, but have no room in their homes to do so. This is the perfect way to be involved with the animal of your choice and be updated regularly on their care and well being. It's a win-win for everyone, especially the dogs!
