Reuben is extra smart, and he likes to please. He's laid back and friendly with everyone he meets. GSRBC has removed Reuben from his home and he is now back in our care. He appears to be healthy, but does have a few open wounds on him that we will be checking out, as well as getting a complete physical done this coming week. He is seriously over weight, and we will be starting him on an exercise routine immediately, as well as getting his obedience back up. Reuben is currently in one of our main foster homes, on Pender Island, but can be met on the mainland, pending an approved application and home visit. We feel so bad for Reuben. He is disorientated, confused, and wondering where his family went and why they are not with him. We wish we could explain it to him so that he could understand, but all he needs to know is that *we* love him and we will always, always be there for him.
October 23rd 2008 ~ Update Reuben has adjusted very well to our family. He is a polite and handsome boy, with a great disposition and, oh so lovable! Reuben is loyal and has no nasty chewing habits ... like some other cuties we know. He is great in the car and enjoys going for outings and being with his people. Reuben gets along well with other big dogs ... likely females and younger males who will be lower in the "pecking order" .. He is very patient with his bossy female housemate and readily plays with young Dylan. Reuben has a higher prey drive and would love to chase small dogs, cats, squirrels, etc. and is available to a feline free zone only. He stays "quite close" when off leash and responds to recall (especially a whistle). When on leash he is a bit unruly and will need lots of obedience practice with someone who is strong physically and mentally to work with him. Like most GSDs, he will test to see where the limits are, and if his person is not 'enforcing' the rules, he will totally take advantage! Reuben
doesn't like to be left ... not separation problems ... just doesn't
like being left behind!! He
will howl or bark a bit when you leave and then settle down and sleep
until you return. He would not be a good match for a condo or townhouse dweller.
December 30th ~ Update Reuben
is still looking for his forever home and we can't understand why!! Reuben
is well behaved and very responsive!
He loves all people and seeks out their attention and approval. He is a very fast learner.
When we practice his basic obedience, he works hard to please and
figure out what is expected of him.
He was patient with all the comings and goings of the holiday
season and was "the calm" in our busy household. Although
Reuben is big and puppy-like when playing with others, he is loving and
gentle with my 82 year old mother, often stepping in to shield her from
the rambunciousness of the others.
He is very interested in all new things that he encounters but
when he realizes that there isn't a problem ... he is eager to gently
say hello. While
Reuben is not a super active dog, he is still a dog that would love to
have a moderately active home with someone that is willing to do
something with him and keep that brain of his active. If you are looking for a handsome, calm, gentle boy to share your life, Reuben is your guy! All he wants is a family of his own to play, hike, and cuddle up with. Reuben enjoys everything about life and is waiting to share yours.
February 21st ~ Adopted!! Our beautiful boy left us tonight for his forever home. Sometimes it is so right that your heart just soars :) As much as we will miss this special spirit, we know he is exactly where he is supposed to be now. Special thanks to Gerry and Tim for opening your doors once more to give a paw up! |
Watch
out for this one - he'll steal your heart! You can tell from Reuben's kind eyes and silly smile that he's a friendly dog. He just loves everyone, and adores it when someone pays attention to him. Reuben is a sensitive soul who likes to
snuggle. He adores people and wants to be your best friend instantly! He
likes to have his belly rubbed. And he always finds something to be happy
about. He's obedient, well-behaved and affectionate - and he's so anxious
to impress you! Reuben and Joni (now Nika) were picked up by animal control back in the summer of 2007. GSRBC placed both of these dogs into separate homes. Nika is enjoying a good life with her family, and they continue to adore her. Sadly, for Reuben, the same luck and commitment was not given to him, and he has been surrendered back into our care a year later. Reuben is somewhere in the 5 -6 age range. He is the easiest dog in the world to take care of. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body, and doesn't give you any trouble. He does have some prey drive, and will chase cats, squirrels and other small animals that run. He LOVES children, and is delighted to be around other dogs. He definitely pays a lot more attention to humans, though! He's very loyal. He also appears to be housetrained, even
though it appears he has spent a lot of time outside these last few
months.
We won't let Reuben down again... His next home, must be his last home, as he has already lost too many times in this world. Reuben is just a fun loving boy. He has a heart of gold and a lot of love to give. Please consider opening your heart and home to this boy. We promise you won't regret it! He is just the same amazing boy that he always was, and we are just as over the moon for him! Reuben has just come back into our care on September 26th 2008. The pictures seen here are from the summer of 2007 when he was in the pound, looking for that special home. Please check back as we add new pictures, and update his progress.
November 30th ~ Update Reuben
is such a wonderful, patient dog. As
I write this my bossy girl is barking in his ear and he just calmly looks
at her! He is the perfect
gentleman. Reuben has great house
manners, always gentle and polite and "mostly" waiting his
turn!! He greets people that come to the door with a wagging tail and
doesn't bark. Outside,
he is ever on the alert! We are
reviewing basic obedience and Reuben is improving quickly.
I think that he had "just forgotten" some of those old
commands like sit, stay, down, etc. We
are also working on lowering his drive and getting him to focus on his
leader. Reuben is eager to please
and responds readily when he gets clear and consistent signals. Everyone
that meets Reuben is impressed with this handsome boy and his wonderful
disposition. His floppy ear and
playful attitude keeps people guessing at his age.
Reuben is very interested but respectful of all the people he meets
and seems to be asking "Are you the one for me?"
January 30th ~ Update Reuben
is the biggest lap dog in the world! He
loves to cuddle and be petted and even enjoys his grooming sessions. He is content to be with his family no matter where or what
they are doing. Reuben,
true to his breed, is a very quick learner.
He has figured out that while I am training with Dylan using the
clicker ... that click sound means "a treat is coming".
When he hears that magical sound he comes running.
Reuben is a mischievous fellow!
Dylan, the puppy ... gets lots of good things to chew ... and
Reuben capitalizes on that ... after a few minutes ... low and behold ...
Reuben has amassed everyone's chewy ... He easily gives them up, however,
if one asks!! He
is a great traveler and enjoys going for car rides, as they usually end in
a new adventure. Reuben
eagerly gets into the vehicle and watches the scenery as it passes.
He patiently waits for his people to return to the vehicle when we
have to step out of short stops.
