Socialization at an early stage is vital to the success of all puppies, and Emma has enrolled in our puppy class. She LOVES to play with the other dogs, but for her, it is all about the people... and of course the treats in their pockets! She has learned to sit nicely for attention, has learned her 'watch', 'off' and 'take it'. She still does jump up on occasion, but is getting much better with that. Her house training is coming along fantastic!! She is a VERY smart girl and catches onto things very quickly! She is food motivated and will do just about anything for a treat :) She loves her snuggle time, and will tuck her head under your chin to really get in there and soak up all the love. Her favorite friend is Zoey, who she will play with for hours, and can even hold her own with. She is definitely NO wall flower!
March 2010 ~ Update Little Emma is growing like a weed! She is already close to 45lbs at only 6 months old. She is the most well behaved puppy we have ever had through, and smart as all get out too. She has basically house trained herself, and will now only have the odd accident. Emma sleeps well through the night - she sleeps like a log actually, and loves to snuggle in. She barely moves all night! She plays very well with all the other dogs, and has recently completed our puppy obedience class. However, Emma is a strong female, and while she does play well with all dogs, she will need continued socialization and strong leadership as she grows. Without it, she could easily become quite the cow with other dogs. She is very vocal and what's hers is hers when it comes to other dogs. She gives lots of warnings and most dogs will take a wide berth around her when she does... except Zoey of course who has more guts than..... ummm... ya. You get the picture. Emma, is still to be spayed, and at this time, we are waiting for her adoptive home to come and find her and we'll have her spayed at that time. There is just too much action around here on a regular basis to keep a puppy like Emma quiet after surgery. So in her best interest, we'll wait and she'll have 10 days of healing time in her new home. Sorry, this is not up for negotiation - Emma will be spayed. We've had a few inquires, wanting to adopt Emma intact, and the answer is always the same. We don't adopt out intact dogs. We believe strongly in controlling the over-population of pets in our country. There are enough dogs without homes who are dying every day. Please spay and neuter your pets! Dogs like Emma should never have to be in rescue.
May 18th ~ Update Emma has once again spun her magic with her sweet and wild ways, and through her, GSRBC has had another wonderful and dedicated foster home come on board! We are very happy with them, and more importantly, so is Emma! She is having the time of her life and learning all sorts of new things, while being very well loved. Emma is now being fostered in the Surrey area. And here is what Emma's new foster has to say:
Emma is a sweet girl! She's been
working on her "Leave it" and "Watch me" during meal
times and is making great progress. She is very calm for a 7 month old
puppy, but always ready to play. She loves soft toys like stuffed
animals or pillows, and carries them around like a true Labrador.
She is amazing on the leash and rarely
pulls; she's content to walk as closely to you as possible, even off the leash!
We have taken many trips to the beach and dog park with Emma and
she has been very polite towards other dogs when meeting them off leash.
Sometimes she growls when on leash and a strange dog appears, but we are
working on this and it should resolve quickly.
Emma tolerates
grooming very well and really enjoys having her ears cleaned, and being
brushed. We're still working on not biting the toothbrush, but she is
very tolerant of having her nails trimmed.
Emma can
sometimes guard her toys or people and will nip at another dog who gets
to close, we are monitoring this and it has lessened with corrections. A
stern "Leave it!" generally ends her undesirable behavior, she
is very eager to please!
With
consistency and lots of exercise Emma will make a wonderful pet; she
needs a dog knowledgeable owner/family so she can thrive. I wouldn't
recommend her for a first time dog owner!
YAY for Emma! She is well on her way now :) Special thanks to Melissa and Sean for opening your hearts and home to our very special girl!

We'd like you to meet Emma!
Emma is around 12 - 13 weeks old, and is extremely social to people and other animals, and is an all round nice girl. She is sweet as sweet can be, but can be a little more on the dominant side with other dogs. Emma was picked up as a stray by the local pound and came to us due to over-crowding at the shelter. She loves people and is a very gentle girl. All she wants is a family to love her, a ball to play with and a nice warm bed to sleep in. She will be very loyal!
Like all puppies, Emma will require ongoing socialization and training in her new home. Obedience classes are a must for Emma and her new family. While puppies are cute, they are also an awful lot of work! Please be sure you have the time and energy before you consider applying to adopt Emma.
April 30th ~ Update Emma is progressing along well and continues to think the world is her oyster :) She has now been spayed and recovered from that very well. Her house training is *almost* perfect, though she does still have the odd accident - usually when left too long. She sleeps like a rock through the night, likely from all that energy she uses during the day! She works hard, plays hard and sleeps hard. That is Emma's way. Emma oozes personality and is a very strong presence in our home. She is not a dog for the first time pet owner, and definitely not one for a push over either. While Emma is very much a people dog and truly does want to please, she still basically sees absolutely nothing wrong with flying through the air with a ferocious bark at new dogs. She isn't really trying to test or push the limits, and it is definitely not fear based. Emma is just a very strong personality who does not yet understand that her behavior will one day get her into serious trouble with a dog that doesn't take flight from her. We are working hard with Emma in this area. She is one bossy girl! If this behavior does not get under control and stay under control in her new home, Emma will most definitely up the anti as she grows and become quite dog aggressive in her adulthood. Even though she lives with 7 other dogs and does well with all of them, new dogs must be shown that she is the boss of all bosses! Socialization and rock solid obedience is the key to helping Emma have a long and happy life (not to mention her new family!). Emma is all personality, and a huge one at that. She steals the hearts of every single person that meets her. She is very endearing. If you are looking for a companion that oozes character and aren't afraid to dig in for the long haul, Emma is your girl!

June 19th ~ Adopted!! We are so pleased to share that Emma and Bear have been adopted together to the same great home! They are sure to keep their new family doubled over in laughter, all the while keeping them on their toes! We couldn't be happier with this match, and know that both Bear and Emma will have long, healthy and happy lives. Thank you to Scott and Kristen for stretching your hearts just that little bit more. :)

**If you are able to buy one months worth for one dog, it would greatly lessen the load. Please specify which dog it is that you would like to feed, and we will show your pledge on each dog's page. This special sponsorship is called "Foster Partner in Care" and simply means that you are part of the foster program for the dog of your choice. One home supplies the shelter, and the other supplies the food. Many people want to help, but have no room in their homes to do so. This is the perfect way to be involved with the animal of your choice and be updated regularly on their care and well being. It's a win-win for everyone, especially the dogs! For more information, please see our Sponsor program
We are a registered non-profit Charity as of April 1st 2005 |
